EUROPEAN DEMOS: A DYNAMIC FIRST YEAR

A look back at 2013, nothing but feelings of accomplishment                    and joy can spark for all of us who started European Demos one year ago. Our enthusiasm turned out to be infectious so as European Demos and its events were very quickly embraced by an inquisitive and warm au-dience, to which we are really grateful. Despite its short presence on Brussels scene, Europe-an Demos held six successful events which aimed at promoting the debate on the future of the united Europe and improving the understanding of current European and international political, social and economic developments and trends. A special focus was also unavoida-bly put, on two occasions, on the Greek particularities and its implications on the country’s path to European integration. While you can find here below the full list and summaries of the past events, European Demos renews its promise for 2014 to accompany you along the path towards European integration with an agenda full of engaging events.

A fascinating but also emotionally moving conversation took place on the occasion of the screening of the film 'The tree and the swing', which participated in the 13th Mediterranean film festival in Brussels. Maria Douza touched upon issues such as immigration, roots and family striking a chord with the audi-ence, which eventually left the venue feeling that the evening was well spent. Apart from Ms Douza, at the event participated as speakers Ms Daphne Gogou (DG Justice, Liberty and Security, European Commission) and Dr Alexandra Kalogirou (DG Education and Culture, European Commission) while Nicos Yannis, founding member of the European Demos, coordinated the discussion.

Eurozone and European Union can over-come difficulties if mechanisms such us the European Banking Union, which is under way, are put in place, stressed George Pa-goulatos, Professor of European Poli-tics and Economy in Athens University of Economics & Business. According to Prof. Pagoulatos, who kept audience interest alive for the whole duration of his presentation, the acceleration of the European unifi-cation is the only way to exit the multifaceted crisis.
